Co2 Laser cutter

60W CO2 laser for cutting and engraving various materials such as plastics, wood, and cardboard. Working area: 814×508 mm
Templates: CAD, vector graphics, images, and photos for engraving.

Start

For cutting, you need vector graphics like DXF, PDF, EPS, SVG…
For engraving, you need raster graphics JPG, PNG, PDF, GIF…

Software

Different vector softwares and also the software to send jobs to the lasercutter is available on the computers of the Fablab.

Material 

Cardboard, wood and plastics, plexiglass.

Not to be cut:

  • Metals
  • PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and other chlorine compounds that can emit toxic chlorine gas fumes.
  • Lacquers and solvents, which may emit toxic fumes.
  • Rubber and other elastic materials that can emit toxic fumes.
Costs

The costs depend on the material required and the time needed.

Cutting:

  • Lines to be cut: Hairline or line thickness less than 0.01mm
  • Lines for a specific order or different settings when cutting on different layers with different colors.
  • Arrange objects to save space. Objects can have common edges.
  • No double lines. Most materials burn more when cut a second time.

Engraving:

  • Engraving single color: lines > 0.15mm or areas. Color black 100%.
  • Engraving graphics or photos: black and white; high contrast; high contrast object foreground to background.
  • Arrange areas/texts to be engraved horizontally at the same height (is faster).

File format
We mainly use Rhino 7.0 and Illustrator CS6 to send the files to the Lasercutter.
All vector graphics and 2D CAD formats that these 2 programs can open. (PDF, AI, DXF, SVG, DXF, DWG)

3D Scanner

3D Scanner

EinScan Pro 2x Plus is a 3D scanner from Shining 3D. It can be used to create 3D models of real objects.

With this scanner you can:

  • Scan objects freehand or with the turntable in high accuracy and resolution
  • Capture the color and texture of the surface
  • Scan in automatic and manual modes
  • Merge multiple scans to capture large objects

Suitable for industrial inspection, reverse engineering, prototyping, digital archiving, and more.

 

Start

The software creates a point cloud that can be exported as OBJ or STL.

Software

The software „EXScan Pro“ is preinstalled at the Fablab computer. Tutorials for the software can be found on the internet.

Material 

Pretty much everything.
Note:  transparent or reflective objects can`t be seen by the scanner. Very small and thin texture like hair is hard to capture.

Shapertool router

Shapertool router

„Shapertool Origin“ is a handheld CNC router similar to a conventional carpenter router but with an in-build surface scanner to recognize the exact position with the help of markers. Through the touch-screen of the router you can position your .svg drawing virtually on the surface of the wood. Then set some basic values like the size of your drill or the carving depth and you are ready to go! The router shows you the carving direction on the display while your hands actively move the router above the wood. Your imprecision gets constantly corrected by the moving head inside a tolerance radius of about 4 cm. If you loose the path or the router is not balanced well above an angle, the motor switches off immediately. Wearing safety googles is obligatory!

Ultimaker S5 dual extrusion

3D printer based on the Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) or Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) process. The 3D printer has two extruders so you can load two different filament types or different colours. This 3D printer can run overnight. Build volume: 330 x 240 x 300mm

Before printing, you have to prepare your 3D model. For this purpose, the software CURA is available at the Fablab. You can also download CURA for free and install it on your computer. 

 

Material 

Fablab has different materials (filaments) to choose from. PLA, TPU, PVA, Breakaway and some experimental filaments. You can also bring your own filament (D=2,85mm).

The costs depend on the material required and the time needed.
